The Otter Room
Why the Otter Room? We have a fondness for
historical aviation here at the Little House on the Portage la Prairie Bed
& Breakfast. Being that we are proudly Canadian and that de Havilland
Aircraft was a Canadian aircraft manufacturer we decided to name our rooms
after great Canadian aircraft. These aircraft were selected because of
their role in developing this great country.
The series of Otter aircraft were primarily bush aircraft that built and
serves the Canadian north. The series of Otter aircraft started with the
single engine de Havilland DHC-3 Otter in 1951. In 1963, the factory
outfitted the single Otter with a turbine engine giving it more power and
versatility. Many Otters operating today have been modified with turbine
engines. The second aircraft in the Otter line was the de Havilland DHC-6
Twin Otter in 1964.
All of the Otters could be equipped on wheels, floats or skis. A very
large number of these aircraft are still flying today. Viking Air, of
Victoria, BC, had acquired the rights to produce parts of these aircraft
after the initial factory quit building them.
On February 24, 2006 Viking Air
purchased the type certificates from Bombardier Aerospace for all the out
of production de Havilland DHC-1 through DHC-7 aircraft.
The ownership of the certificates gives Viking Air the exclusive right to
manufacture new aircraft.
The Otter Room provides our Bed & Breakfast guests the utmost in
comfort, relaxation and convenient amenities. Included in the room is a
large closet, wireless internet, full satellite television,
refrigerator/freezer and ceiling fan. Newly renovated with warm colours
and a queen memory foam bed this room will exceed your expectations.
